Here's Why Summer Ups Your Varicose Vein Risk

Posted on June 11, 2024

While our Georgia climate warms up most of the year, when summer rolls around, the temperatures really soar. And, when that happens, your varicose vein risk increases. Want to enjoy the season while protecting your vein health? This is how to do it!

Why Summer Increases Varicose Vein Risk

The season of sunshine is dangerous for vein health. But why is that so? Well, when temperatures rise, your veins can start to dilate. In turn, it becomes harder for blood to flow out of your legs, allowing pooling to occur. As a result, you may develop edema (swelling) as well as other symptoms associated with varicose veins. So, if you want to preserve your vein health in the long, hot summer, stay in the shade when you can; stick to light-weight clothes that fit loosely; and stay indoors in the cool when it's impossible to avoid the heat outside.

Now, even in the shade, there's one more risk for varicose veins that you could develop in the summer: sitting all day. And that's because this bad habit often causes blood to pool in your feet and legs, worsening your vein disease symptoms. A better option? Get off of that pool lounger and hop into the pool on a regular basis. (Bonus points if you can squeeze in some laps while you're in the water.) Doing so will help you cool off; could support better blood flow; and will help get pooling blood up and out of your feet, thereby reducing many of the summer's varicose vein risk factors.

Vein Care in Georgia Can Save Your Summer

While some vein health risks are avoidable, others—including your genes—can't be helped. And that means you could develop varicose veins, if you take extra care to avoid sitting in the sun this summer. So, what should you do if you're noticing signs of veins disease? Visit our Georgia vein care center, where we can boost your vein health with minimally invasive procedures that can restore your legs' healthy appearance.
