Are Varicose Veins Genetic? Exploring New Data

This varicose vein study—the largest ever conducted—looked at data on close to 50,000 people with varicose veins, and 1.3 withou this form of vein disease. This allowed researchers to identify 139 different genetic markers that increase your risk for painful, bulging veins. And some of them include weaker vein valves and reduced elasticity in the veins.

The study also revealed that biological processes such as inflammation and blood pressure play a role in your risk for vein disease. As does the way your body forms new blood vessels and heals wounds. Now, having these genetic markers doesn't guarantee that you'll develop varicose veins. But it can help us know if you have a higher risk for vein disease, so we can protect you with early screenings and treatment options.

Are My Varicose Veins Genetic? Additional Risk Factors

In addition to genetic varicose vein risk factors, you're more likely to develop this condition if you're a woman; if you're overweight; or if you don't move a lot in your day-to-day life. (Gender, obesity and standing or sitting all day all increase your risk for vein disease.)

So, are varicose vein genetics? Some risk factors for this form of vein disease are inherited, but you can prevent others by moving more and following a vein-healthy diet. And, if you do develop varicose veins, our team of experts in Georgia are here to help.
